West Nile virus: A study of public health responses and risk perceptions

This research project is now complete.  We are now in the process of using the results to publish scientific papers and to improve West Nile virus programs in British Columbia and elsewhere.  

The goal of this study was to examine and understand risk perceptions and the uncertainty associated with West Nile virus (WNV) and interventions used to prevent and control human cases.  This was achieved by using an integrated systems approach whereby research gaps were identified and the methodology was driven by the nature of the uncertainties in the problem.

Through this study we hope to answer a wide variety of questions such as:

• Do health beliefs influence behaviors recommended to reduce the risk of WNV?
• Do such behaviors differ based on experience with WNV and demographics?
• Are there differences between how laypeople and health experts make risk and decision trade-offs for WNV control and prevention?
• How are decisions made given uncertainty?
• Can spraying with pesticides potentially be harmful to children?
• What happens to risk assessments when you incorporate population heterogeneity and uncertainty in data points?
• What influences risk perceptions of WNV and WNV interventions?
• Is there a proportion of the population that worries about all risks from disease to insect repellents to pesticide exposure?
• What is the role of risk perception in risk communication and public health messaging?
